San Diego makes a move to keep Comic Con...

We all know that San Diego Convention Center's contract with Comic Con runs out in 2012. One of the major discussions between attendees the last few years has been where will we be going in 2013? Las Vegas? Los Angeles? Anahiem? Somewhere else?

Honestly, I don't want it to leave San Diego. It's obvious that the Convention Center is not big enough anymore, as crazy as that is to say, because the place is damn huge! But last year the Convention attracted 126,000 attendees. And this year, all passes are already sold out. 4-Day passes sold out before the end of the year in 2009, which is a first. The waitlist already has 400 people on it. More people come every year. So San Diego has two choices, go bigger or lose it.

The city made a move to keep the convention through 2015 early this month. The Port of San Diego agreed to a deal that will cost $753 million to extend the Convention Center to support the new mass of attendees. When looking at the size of the extension they plan to build, my eyes bulged. That would definitely do the trick to ease the crowded hallsways of the Convention. Now, obviously, building this extension will take some time. It actually would not be avalible until 2015. But, the keep the organizers of Comic Con in San Diego until then, they are offering $500,000 in hotel tax revenue.

It would cover the convention from 2011 to 2015, when the new extension of the Convention Center would be avalible. Apparently a decision is to be made in a few weeks. But with the cities of Los Angeles and Anahiem also bidding to the organizers, it's clear the next few weeks will be very interesting.

Me, I'm hoping it stays in San Diego. That city was born to host this event. Nothing else would ever be the same.
