The Doctor returns and all is right with the universe

A couple weeks ago at WonderCon the fifth season premiere (or 31st depending on how long you've been watching) of "Doctor Who" was previewed and it was fantastic.

On Saturday night the show premiered on BBC America, so I can finally talk about all the new doctor's greatness.

Newcomer Matt Smith plays the eleventh doctor with just the right blend of madness, arrogance and danger. I thought it would be impossible for die hard fans to accept anyone after the immensely popular David Tennant. However, Smith instantly reeled viewers back into the doctor's world by keeping some of the charm that made Tennant so successful.

It helps that Steven Moffat has taken over the showrunning reins from Russell T. Davies. Moffat was the writer of some of "Doctor Who's" best episodes, so fans were immediately on board with putting him in charge.

The new season picks up where "The End of Time" left off with the Doctor in post regeneration mode. Because of the spectacular nature of his regeneration, the Doctor must wait for the TARDIS to rebuild itself.

It is during this time that he meets young Amelia Pond, a Scottish girl with a mysterious crack in her wall.

Through an unfortunate misstep in time the Doctor doesn't return to see Amelia in the five minutes he promises, but 12 years later. That crack allowed an alien prisoner to escape and the Doctor must save the world in 20 minutes with no TARDIS or sonic screwdriver.

Karen Gillan is the grown up Amy and in the tradition of the Doctor's best companions is smart and feisty, however, she doesn't completely trust him yet so she doesn't have the hero worship that other companions have had.

I've also watched the next two episodes and Smith really becomes the Doctor in episode two "The Beast Below."

I know a lot of fans were concerned about how the show would fare without Tennant, but, rest assured Moffat and Smith have maintained everything that's great about the show and added enough new elements to keep the "Doctor Who" universe happy.
