'Supernatural': Western episode teasers
Thanks to Jensen blabbing at San Francisco Con a few weeks ago, it was revealed to the fandom that episode 17 of this season will be a western episode. Through a few interviews here and there since, we know that Sam and Dean will be transported back into the 1860's because they need to have a conversation with Samuel Colt.

The Challenger tragedy remembered
I was in fourth grade when they showed the Challenger space shuttle launch on live TV and it was a big deal for schoolchildren because Christa McAuliffe, a teacher, was among the crew. My elementary school wasn't in a fantastic neighborhood, so when they put some of the older kids together in one room and hooked up a 13 in. television for us to watch, we knew it was a big deal.
At the time I think we were more excited about the idea of having the morning off from classwork than watching the shuttle launch. Then the unthinkable happened and shortly after take off the shuttle exploded.
Most of the students didn't understand what had happened until the reporters were explaining it. There were three teachers in the room, the two younger teachers started crying which caused some of the kids to start crying.
Also in the room, the scariest teacher in school, she taught fifth grade and gave out homework everyday. She dismissed the two crying teachers, turned off the TV and calmed down 50 kids all by herself. She became a little less scary that day (until the next year, when I ended up in her class.)
As word spread the day became increasingly sad and by the time I got home I started to understand the magnitude of what happened. When I got home my dad was watching the news and they showed the disaster over and over, my mom wanted to find something else for my brother and I to watch, but there was nothing else.
This was in the days before 24 hour news networks, there were the big three and CNN. Up unitl that point I hadn't seen all day news coverage before. As a TV obsessed child, it really resonated to me how big this was when they didn't go back to showing regular TV.
It was the first time I gained a little perspective beyond my eight year old world and to this day I can't watch shuttle launches on TV.

"Supernatural" and "Smallville" premieres postponed
File this under... scary
Will Smith's daughter Willow is going to be starring in a remake of "Annie."
Yes, this "Annie."
And rapper Jay-Z will produce.
Methinks this is just one big excuse to finally have Jay-Z's version of "Hard Knock Life" in an "Annie" movie.
You know, Smith has another kid that can
Maybe, I don't know... say, "The Monster Squad?"
Oh, wait...
Crap.

Oscar nominations: They forgot who?
What does Christopher Nolan have to do to get a best director nomination. First he's ignored for "The Dark Knight" and now "Inception," which by the way was the only decent movie in theaters for a big chunk of 2010.
I guess we'll have to keep hope alive for "The Dark Knight Rises."
The other huge miss by the Academy was in the visual effects category where "Tron: Legacy" wasn't nominated.
How is it possible that a movie that takes place inside a computer doesn't have the best visual effects of the year. It's true that "Iron Man 2," "Inception," "Harry Potter," and "Alice In Wonderland" all had spectacular effects, but seriously "Hereafter."
Now I haven't seen "Hereafter" but, I find it hard to believe that it had better effects than "Tron: Legacy." It should win based on the light cycle scene alone. I understand that the Academy looks down its nose at sci-fi, but come on, it's their jobs to recognize the best movies of the year regardless of genre.
These continuous slaps in the face makes them lose credibility.

"CATCH VD": really CW? really?
Oscar nominations: first impressions
"The King's Speech" led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor. Colin Firth has become the favorite for Best Actor, though he has stiff competition from James Franco in "127 Hours."
I'm hoping that these nominations along with the 14 Bafta's and the Producer's Guild win is pushing "The King's Speech" ahead of "The Social Network" which received eight nominations including Best Picture, Actor, Adapted Screenplay and Director.
"True Grit" followed with 10 and "The Fighter" received seven. Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams were all nominated in the Supporting categories. It's no secret that I've been in love with Bale since "Newsies" and "Swing Kids" so I'm very excited to see him finally recognized for his talent.
I think it helps that these characters are so familiar that you have to be a robot not to get emotional about their final chapter.
There weren't any big surprises this morning, though there was a few notable snubs which we'll cover in a separate column.
Be sure to stay with us for complete Oscar coverage on "Inscaped," as well as our usual hilarious live blog during the show.

Marvel's next project: Black Panther
- Chiwetel Ejiofor-I know he's not known for his action abilities, but he was awesome in "Serenity" and has the right amount of gravitas to pull off the Panther's alter ego T'Challa.
- Coby Bell-His work on "Burn Notice" proves he can do action and drama. It's just a question if Marvel would take a chance on a TV actor that isn't as well known outside the black community.
- Idris Elba-He handled the action in "The Losers" just fine and is obviously a talented actor, but his age is a disadvantage, as is his upcoming role in "Thor" as one of the gods since Marvel may not want there to be any confusion.
- Michael Jai White-He played Spawn so obviously he has no problem with action, and is an accomplished martial artist who would bring a lot to the character. There is a question about his serious acting chops and whether Marvel would take a chance on casting him.
- Common-The onetime Green Lantern would make a great Black Panther and surprise a lot of people with his screen presence.

Candace's 'Being Human' rebuttal
Along with Stephanie, I also tuned into SyFy's series premiere of "Being Human". However, I did not have the same thoughts on it as she did.
Supernatural San Francisco Con Report
US 'Being Human' is no UK 'Being Human'
It is these characters and the chemistry between the three leads that keeps the show intensely fascinating and instantly watchable.
How will I make it through the morning without Regis?
This morning on "Live With Regis and Kelly," Regis announced that he was leaving the show later this year after 28 years of morning chats, trivia questions and interviews.
Now, this is no surprise, Regis is almost 80, but it still feels wrong. Breakfast just isn't the same without Regis to talk you through it. Also, how will I know what restaurants to visit without hearing about Regis and Joy's night on the town.
Of course talk has immediately turned to who will replace Regis. Lets get one thing straight, Regis is irreplaceable. There will never be anyone else like him.
However, if we're discussing successors the list must automatically include frequent guest hosts Anderson Cooper, Neil Patrick Harris, Mark Consuelos and Cameron Mathison.
But, let's not think about any of that just yet. Right now let's spend the rest of the year celebrating the talk show legacy of Regis Philbin.

Iowa might just have it
I think Best Supporting Actress is a collection of amazing actresses and one of the toughest categories in years.
Right now Jacki Weaver from "Animal Kingdom," Hailee Steinfeld from "True Grit," Helena Bonham Carter from "The King's Speech" and Melissa Leo from "The Fighter" are all beyond deserving.
That fifth slot can go anywhere. Some think Mila Kunis from "Black Swan" might get it. I hope people don't discount Barbara Hershey from "Black Swan."
The Iowa Film Critics released its Best of the Year list and it looks good. Very good.
Best Film
“The Social Network”
Best Director
David Fincher, “The Social Network”
Best Actor
Colin Firth, “The King’s Speech”
Best Actress
Natalie Portman, “Black Swan”
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, “The Fighter”
Best Supporting Actress
Melissa Leo, “The Fighter”
Best Animated Film
“Toy Story 3″
This, to me, looks like the Oscar winners list.
Sure, I want "Inception" to win, but I am a realist to know that it won't.
I would be happy with these acting results though.
Stay tuned for our complete Oscar coverage for more details.

Tyler Perry and 'The Game' big winners
To put that in perspective new episodes of "No Ordinary Family" and "V" were around the five and a half million viewers range. In its own timeslot "The Game" beat out both "Parenthood" and "Detroit 1-8-7" by a large margin.
BET promoted the crap out of last night's premiere with non-stop commercials and a weekend long catch up marathon, so it'll be interesting to see how next week's episode fares.
As for the show itself, it's not my cup of tea but I found it interesting that the format was tweaked making the show a full hour and having it become a dramedy that switched easily between comedy and drama. This is a style that Tyler Perry uses to great success in his many movies and TV shows.
Speaking of Perry, the multi-hyphenate entertainment mogul received 19 NAACP Image Awards nominations. Now he can't possibly win them all because in a few categories he's nominated against himself. His TV shows "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns are nominated for best comedy series and several of the show's stars are nominated in acting categories.
Perry was also nominated for writing and directing "For Colored Girls," while many of the actresses received acting nominations.
The Image Awards can sometimes feature an eclectic list of nominees and this year is no different, Where else would you see Jaden Smith nominated for best actor against Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman (wow it hurt just typing that).
Other nominees included Inscaped favorite Dule Hill for best actor in a comedy, the awesome Salli Richardson-Whitfield of "Eureka" for best actress in a comedy, the last good thing on "The Office" Craig Robinson and "Glee's" spectacular Amber Riley in the supporting categories.
Of course none of them will win because Tyler Perry's shows win everything. I'm starting to think that there should be categories for best performances in a Tyler Perry show so everyone else can have a fighting chance.
While the television comedy nominations are ridiculous, the drama categories feature big names like Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Jada Pinkett Smith, S. Epatha Merkerson and Alfre Woodard. The work these actors and the rest of the drama nominees do will never be recognized at mainstream award shows so it's nice to see them here.
The last notable nomination to mention is Aaron McGruder in the best television comedy writing category for "The Boondocks" episode "The Fund-Raiser." This is quite simply one of the funniest half hours on TV this year.
If nothing else, The Image Awards are always one of the more entertaining award shows of the season. It airs on FOX March 4 at 8 p.m.

Oh, happy day!
Woot.
The best word to come out of the pickup was from "Richard Castle" himself (on his Twitter account):
Woke up feeling good today. Feel like I received a real pick-me-up.

'The Cape' makes a super first impression
In the lead up to the series premiere last night, the Internet had gone into meltdown mode.
The show revolves around Vince Faraday (David Lyons), a cop who is framed as corrupt and presumed dead. To protect his family and clear his name, he adopts the persona of his son's favorite hero The Cape.
He is trained by carnival performers/bank robbers led by the charismatic Max Malini played by the perfectly cast Keith David.
The first hour of the premiere set up this part of the story and felt a little slow, until The Carnival of Crime showed up. The training sequence with the carnival performers was the most interesting part of Vince's transition and could have taken more time.
The main villain is Chess, who is also known as legitimate security contractor Peter Fleming. The always fantastic James Frain plays up Chess to the hilt, while Fleming seems like a bit of an afterthought. It also seems impossible that Fleming is seen as a real businessman, because he practically screams "look at me, I'm evil."
As a part of his quest Faraday is helped by the mysterious blogger Orwell, portrayed by sci-fi rock star Summer Glau. The only problem with this role is that no one will ever buy Glau as a damsel in distress now that she's kicked so much butt in "Firefly," "Serenity" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."
At one point when she was being attacked by an assassin I kept waiting for her to stand up and fight back, which would have improved her bland character. Glau is too good an actress for such a generic character. Hopefully this will be improved as the show progresses.
Ultimately the show's success rests on Lyons believability as The Cape, because no matter how great Michael Keaton and Christian Bale are as Bruce Wayne, it doesn't work if they can't be Batman. And that's the biggest issue with the first two hours of "The Cape." Lyons has Faraday down, but I'm still not sold on The Cape.
The writers also left his superpowers ambiguous, so they could presumably add to them as needed in specific episodes. However, it needs to be clear what he can do and where Vince Faraday ends and The Cape begins.
Fortunately, these are all things that can be fixed as the show grows. Producers should also consider getting rid of Faraday's wife. Her character's story felt like one story too many when they are also focused on Vince's journey, his work with Orwell, the Carnival, Chess and Tarot. With all that going on she's expendable and her death will add some drama to the show's campiness and free up Faraday for a pairing with Orwell.
Overall "The Cape" got off to a decent enough start to keep me interested for a couple more episodes, but it needs to give me a sign of where it's headed to keep my interest longer.
Review: 'Bob's Burgers'
It's about a crazy family that runs a burger joint.
The show is done in the same style of "Dr. Katz" and "Home Movies."
As I type this, the show is still going on. I only got through 10 minutes.
In those 10 minutes there were dead body jokes, jokes about crotch itch and even a running gag about child molestation. There was even an entire conversation about which kid wouldn't get molested and why.
It's so bad and unfunny I can't even begin to explain.
It's like "Raising Hope" was broken shards of glass and dipped into season three of "Heroes" and rubbed in my eyes.
Utterly painful.
Directors Guild guesses
This year is a toughy.
I think it's safe to assume that the one, for sure, in this is David Fincher for "The Social Network."
That leaves four more choices.
Christopher Nolan for "Inception" is one that will probably come up today.
I'm really thinking that the other three nominees will end up being David O. Russell for "The Fighter," Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan" and Tom Hooper for "The King's Speech."
For more information, check out The Directors Guild website.

Anyone 'Wanna See It'?
January is known for being a "slow" month.
But, come on.
The only major release this week was the Nicolas Cage supernatural action film "Season of the Witch." Not to be confused with the third "Halloween" movie.
Basically it's about some warriors that have to transport a witch to a monastery. "Hellboy" himself Ron Perlman also stars.
The film is directed by Dominic Sena, who worked with Cage on "Gone in 60 Seconds." Guess lightning doesn't strike twice.
On Friday the film had a one percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One percent.
By Sunday that number rose a tad to four percent. That comes out to three "good" reviews and 72 negative. Even those three reviews know the film is bad, but found something to like about it.
That point can and probably will cause an argument about how to critique movies (we will likely have it.)
The film grossed around $10 million with a reported budget of $40 million. As Stephanie likes to say, it will have to make a lot of money overseas.
The most hilarious thing, considering it's the first release of the year, is to see it ranked as the "top movie of the year" here.
On a side note, the "Oscar" films of this season, that are still in theaters, are doing very well.
"Black Swan" $61 million total.
"True Grit" total $110 million total.
"The Fighter" $57 million total.
"The King's Speech" $33 million total.

Inscaped week in TV
"V" also returned to television this week with its second season premiere. This show had an underwhelming first season and was a surprise renewal. Producers and cast have been promising a more revealing and action packed season two.
However, the premiere didn't really live up to the hype. All that was revealed was that the visitors want to use humans for breeding and that Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) may have been experimented on when she was pregnant.
Maybe the upcoming appearances of original stars Jane Badler and Marc Singer will add some much need excitement.
The original mini-series was ground-breaking and appointment TV, this show is neither and is not long for this world. The first night ratings were a very low six and half million, which were third behind Paula Abdul's ridiculous "Live to Dance" and the repetitive "The Biggest Loser."
I'm wondering if ABC will continue to air the last new episodes or pull it in the next few weeks and burn them off in the summer. My money's on the latter.
'Black Swan' destined to be a huge Oscar winner

Supernatural 4th wall episode spoilers
Best moment(s) of 2010
Saturday evening, July 24 at Comic-Con.
Hall H to be exact. Hard to remember the specific time thanks to Stabby McStab Stab.
Stephanie and I were at opposite ends of the room and I was sitting next to this very nice couple. The two of them had no clue what was about to happen and that made it even better.
We had heard rumors of Daniel Craig or Harrison Ford showing up for the "Cowboys and Aliens" panel.
We got both.
Craig came out first and got a good reaction.
Ford came out and the roof blew off Hall H. I can't even really put into words how amazing the reaction was. In some ways there was so much noise though screaming, clapping etc. that it created this strange buzzing noise that seemed to block out everything.
I still remember the look on the man sitting next to me. His mouth was wide open in shock and it was almost pure amazement joy.
Less than an hour later, it got even better with the big "Avengers" announcement. Even though Stephanie and I both knew it was coming, it was beyond everything we could have expected. (I still get goosebumps watching that video.)
In some ways it was almost too good to be true. I've mentioned this on the show before, but all our life nerds dreamed of this day. We just always thought it would never happen.
It's probably extremely dorky to say, but I was sitting there thinking "I'm watching history."
Then of course then next morning, I got to do this:
BEST... DAY... EVER!

Stop trying to make 'Green Hornet' happen
Everytime I see a trailer for "The Green Hornet" I think of that episode. No matter how many awesome trailers they make, I can spot a bad movie a mile away.
Seth Rogen is no action hero, as matter of fact, he's barely funny, so the idea of casting him in an action movie is ridiculous to begin with.
I've always loved "The Green Hornet" for its fun, campiness and its cool style, but this movie doesn't appear to have any of that. I have yet to make up my mind if I'll bite the bullet and go see this film, but the trailer isn't selling me on anything.
